First showreel.

SHOWREEL: John-Jo Ritson / RideClass Productions: “From then till now” from John-Jo Ritson on Vimeo.

I recently realized I did not have a showreel. Seems like something I should have done long ago! However it is now done. Was fun pulling together all my favorite clips. There was about 10 mins of stuff I wanted to use. This is how it came out. Hoping to be back to work as per usual soon. Ankle surgery has been healing up well. Lots of physio and the OK for skiing 8 days away.
Stoked.

3 Timelapse and one monster edit…

I have yet another Timelapse in post production. I have lost count of how many I have done while staying at Arrow Vally Farm. I have 2 days left here in which to bring together a monster mini doco which will include all my timelaspe photography from the past 3 weeks. I have tried to take advantage of this beautiful place by running a TL whenever I saw an opportunity to do so.
Here are 3 screenshots from a piece I am pulling together right now.

Star Trail Photos.

Have been wanting to create some start trail images for ages. Found a piece of software called Star Stax and it is pretty easy to use. Here are is my first image.

It is 90 images from a timelaspe I should while out here in BC. Each photo was a 20 sec exposure. That equals 30 mins of exposure.

Will be adding simething like this into the TL’s at some point. Currently pulling together TL’s and footage for a promo video which is taking up all my free time. Hoping to get it done this next week.

Thanks for reading!

Astro Time Lapse Photography: Selecting Location

Creating a Timelapse of the Stars is addictive. I’m hooked. I can not put my finger on why exactly it seems to draw me in, but it does. It could be that because there are so many factors which have to come together for an Astrolapse, that the heavens truly have to align for it to be successful. Scuse the pun- but it is true!

As the moon wanes towards this weekend I am hoping to capture one a night and bring them all together in one long clip.

Last night was the second night in a row where I spent an hour or so walking round the ranch looking for the perfect spot to show not only The Milkyway but to also include some interesting foreground feature. I was hoping to use one of the large wooden gates to frame the stars.

Armed with my Canon 7D, intervalometer, tripod, stickytape, handwarmers, torch, matches, lighter, a red candle (“I love lamp) and a whole bunch of excitement I set off into the darkness. No moon means dark. The ranch I am staying on breeds horses, has bears (both black and grizzly), elk, deer and skunks wondering through all the time. So while trying not to use the torch so my night vision could kick in, I was also hoping not to bump into any unexpected wildlife. The horses make some very random, loud, un horse like noises when they are getting jiggy, or at least courting one another. So much so that several times that the loud growling sound bellowed down the valley I found myself frozen to the spot, wondering what a bear sounds like. It was soon followed by large thudding of hoofs and I regained my composure and continued my search for the perfect set up.

The final product is in post now, but here are some of the test shots I took while on my expedition.
Check back soon to see the final result.

In the end, I got the set up I was after. This is one still from the timelapse.

Light painting. Canon EOS 7D. 5 sec exposure. 400ISO. F1.8 on Canon 50mm.

Have been playing around with long exposures and light sources at night. After helping out a friend cutting rebar I knew I had to have a go at using it during the night. Here are the results.

Hoping to do some more soon with other light sources. Also some astro timelaspe are to come.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Last night I won the first ever Lake Louise Film comp! Had a load of support with about 30 people coming down to The Elk and Oarsman for the results. I was a tense hour as technical difficulties delayed results. We finally got to it about 10pm. We watched a few entries before we had to pick the under 18s winner Mark Teterenko . They then moved on to the main results. In 4th place was   this video    in 3rd was  evan lavallee from SHTCHA and they then showed the 2 last videos in no particular order. That was 403 media and mine. After that, the announced I had won 1st! Sooo happy! Won $500 in store credit at Banff Photography. I had already picked out a lens I wanted so bought it today. Tokina 11-16mm F2.8. Here is a quick test shot. Just had to try it out!

Above is the ungraded clip, below graded.

PP was Cinema with a little s curve in post and a small boost of saturation. It looked fine before but I just wanted to grade it.

I hope to get a chance to do some Astro TL’s with this lens soon but having to move out of our place so busy right now. End of season, packing up, sorting out, working out how much of my life I can fit into limited bag space. Wondering if I’ve used something enough for it to have earned its place in a bag, or if it is time to “leave” “trash” or “giveaway”. I’ve enjoyed snowboarding this year for sure, but now I feel fatigued and with the snow tuning into bullet proof till 10 and into porridge at 12… its just not worth it! It kills me to say that as I love spring riding, but there you go!

Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) Time Lapse in Banff Canada.

This is the first shot in the Timelapse sequence. Was shot on 25th April 2012. There has been lots of solar activity this year, but trying to combine the solar storms with; night time, clear skies, early warnings, and not being asleep can be quite the challenge. Even when the stars do align (scuse the pun) the lights may not show up! I have been lucky enough to see them twice in the last week. This time I managed to capture some of the show in a Timelapse.

The aurora borealis has been going off recently so I decided to do an Astro timelapse with the hope of getting the lights in there as well. You can see the green glow on the horizon which is the Northern Lights.

Location: Banff, AB, Canada.

Camera: Canon EOS 7D.
Lens: 18-55mm F/ 3.5
Settings: ISO 1000. Shutter 20 sec. Shot in CRAW.
Minor correction in post (mainly just white balance).
Total time shooting was about 1hr 45 min. – I wanted to shoot longer but the cold got the better of me!
Every second of TL took about 13 mins to capture.

Creating this has inspired me to create more astro-timelapse while here in Canada as the stars here just blow me away.

Would love to be able to use a Kessler Slider with motion control to get some real camera movement. At this stage I am just really happy to have been able to witness and record such a cool event as this.

Below is a video I’ve entered into a film comp. The prize is $500 at Banff Photography. Should I be lucky enough to win I plan on buying a new lens; Tonika 11-16 mm F2.6 which would be PERFECT for astro timelapse.

Please watch the video and if you like it follow this link to vote. It is via Facebook, and the app will ask you to allow it, be assured it is a pretty non invasive app, mainly just needs your name etc to count votes and then if you want it to, it will post to your wall that you voted on it.

Thanks for taking the time to read my blog.

Long exposure shenanigans AKA Light Painting

Shooting with the Canon EOS 7D is fun! I love this camera for my video work and more and more for taking STILLS! It is funny that I bought a DLSR for video and only occasionally take photos. But when I DO take them I am always blown away.

Waiting for the Northern  Lights last night I decided to take some long exposure photographs and experiment with the torch I was using. I have done this before in the first few days of having the 7D but I had time to kill so had another go. After all, experimenting helps us learn.

While I was there a few friends turned up and they wrote their names too!

Social networking with friends: Benifits?

I recently completed a video “Roli Canoli : Smiling Faces” which I created for a film completion. The rule were simple and the subject was, well, having fun at Lake Louise Ski Area. I went out with a firend and co worker named Roland. He is from Germany as a pretty funny guy. If you think he kills it on skis (which he does) you should see him ripping up the park on snow blades!!! funniest thing ever.

Currently in the comp Roland and I are the underdogs.

Film comps are funny things. Having won my first comp ever for Time at TC,

My other film comp entries were trying to win a chance to see my girlfriend who was on the other side of the world. She was in Canada, I was in Australia. It is called Poles apart.

I also made one on a real short time frame called Oanaka Is.. based around the township of Wanaka as part of Wanaka Fest 2010

And here I am again in a film comp! The competition is being run by Lake Louise Ski area and the prize is $500 gift certificate in a local Photography shop.

I would LOVE to have a professional lens. but having broken my collar bone in 2 places and 6 ribs, a tooth broken by a peanut I am in the hole for quite some cash. That is why I have tried to put together an edit… to win the $500 so I could possibly get The Tonika 11-16mm F/2.6 🙂 a pro wide angle.

But we do have time, we do. There is till the 29th of April 2012 to vote for my video.

Any chance you could help me move up to 1st? or 2nd? not that there is a prize for 2nd… but still it would be better than 4th!

The app they have used on facebook will ask to be allowed access to your information. I know some people do not like this. i am not a big fan, let me tell you. But I do limit the amount of info of mine I put out there, so when I do want to do something like this I can justify it.

So there is my plea I guess, help out a guy who is struggling to make things work after a run of bad luck… or the local big crews swoop in and take the winnings.

Your call, but with your help maybe we can bring em down!!!
